EtonHouse Opens Singapore’s first 100% Mandarin immersion child care centre

EtonHouse 681 Bukit Timah

In January 2017, EtonHouse opened a Chinese immersion child care centre in Hwa Chong International School in Bukit Timah in response to the needs of working parents who want their children to gain a strong Chinese foundation in the early years.

A 100% Chinese-only immersion programme in the Pre-Nursery to Nursery years will provide an excellent foundation for the language starting with children as young as 18 months of age. The uniqueness of this programme is that the inquiry-based approach which EtonHouse is known for, will be delivered entirely in Chinese in the first 3 years of pre-school followed by a 70:30 Chinese:English programme in kindergarten years. In a child care setting, the children will be exposed to a considerable amount of time listening, speaking and writing in Chinese which is essential for any sustainable language development in the early years.

In a child care setting, the children will be exposed to a considerable amount of time listening, speaking and writing in Chinese which is essential for any sustainable language development in the early years. The curriculum delivery through the inquiry-based approach will make the experiences fun, engaging and meaningful. Chinese is therefore acquired as a life skill instead of just a language.

Says Ms Renee Sim, EtonHouse’s curriculum specialist, “Learning a new language can open you up to an array of new sights, sounds, tastes, and experiences. Learning Chinese acts as a gateway to its’ rich culture which has over 5000 years of history. In addition to building children’s language skills, learning Chinese can help children become more globally-focused and culturally competent. In our Chinese immersion programme, we create a Chinese language environment in our classrooms and studio spaces where learning opportunities are based upon topics connected to children’s interests and current experiences. The key is keeping it natural so children find the language meaningful because it is applicable and relates to their own experiences. ”

We look forward to providing a quality Chinese immersion early years programme in EtonHouse Zhong Hua Preschool.
