Languages

Newton offers two languages other than English. These are Mandarin and Japanese. All children must choose one of these language classes to attend in the morning. In the Afternoon session we offer immersion classes in Mandarin called our Pre-SAP programme.  The Pre-Special Achievement Programme (Pre-Sap) is a pre-school Mandarin programme which focuses on oral and written language development and will provide a sound foundation for later achievements, to better prepare children for their primary school education and later life.  There will be a strong emphasis on ‘standard' English as well.

The internationally based curriculum that we use in the Pre-Schools draws from best practice from a range of educational programmes using the Early Learning Goals from the UK as a framework for our Early Years Programme (Nursery through to Kindergarten). We focus on six areas of learning - Personal and Social Development, Language and Literacy, Mathematical Development, Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Physical Development and Creative Development. The focus of teaching and learning is to use a play-based approach where the teacher is the facilitator, tapping in on the children's interests and creating diverse learning situations based on their observations.

Learning Features

A thematic approach is used to develop the curriculum. The teacher and learning strategies that are employed by the school are mainly to immerse the child in the learning.

Learning experiences are developed that allow the child to ‘do' rather than being a passive learner. Children's interests are acknowledged and used to develop concepts further.  Experiences are taken outside the school grounds when the children are taken on excursions to broaden the learning environment and to make the learning relevant to the child.
